A Japanese study finds eating lots of fruits and vegetables doesn't lower the odds of developing colon cancer, the Asahi Shimbun reported Wednesday.

The surprising finding by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare panel followed a seven- to 10-year study of 90,000 men and women, ages 40-70, from various areas in Japan.

The researchers studied each subject's fruit and vegetable consumption and during the study period and found 705 of the 90,000 people sampled got colon cancer.

After adjusting calculations by age, smoking habits and alcohol consumption, the researchers found no statistical difference in the risk of colon cancer for people who ate lots of fruits and vegetables and those who did not.
