Girl Admits 'stringing Up' Boy, 5

A girl of 12 yesterday admitted assaulting a five-year-old boy who came within seconds of dying when he was tied to a tree with a rope around his neck.

The boy was found "scared and crying" outside a fish and chip shop hours after disappearing while playing in the front garden of his home. He had red ligature-type marks around his neck.

His assailant lied to police about the incident, blaming four innocent children, aged 11 and 12, who were questioned as attempted murder suspects.

In one of several confused accounts about what had happened, the boy claimed that he had been strung up, beaten with sticks and nettles and had a rope wrapped around his neck, stomach and genitals.

The attack in woods close to where he lived in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, happened during school half-term on May 31 and led to comparisons with the 1993 murder of two-year-old James Bulger in Merseyside.

The boy had been playing in his garden with his seven-year-old sister and two other children. His mother checked on them at 4.30pm, went in to do the washing up and when she checked again he had disappeared.

Prof Christopher Milroy, a Home Office pathologist, told Dewsbury youth court that "firm pressure" had been applied to his neck with a length of rope or string. He added: "If applied for a few seconds longer there is a strong likelihood that the boy would have died."
