TORONTO, Canada (AHN) – The Canadian Red Cross has plead guilty to charges of distributing blood which was infected with HIV and Hepatitis C.
More than 3,000 people have died since receiving the infected blood, in addition to the 1,000 believed infected with HIV, and another 20,000 thought to have contracted Hepatitis C.
Previously, the Canadian Red Cross had managed the national blood supply, yet after a 1997 public inquiry into the infected blood, they were replaced by a state run agency.
The head of the Canadian Red Cross, Dr Pierre Duplessis, delivered a video-taped message to the court, saying the Red Cross “accepted responsibility” for “distributing harmful products” to those that relied on the charity for their health, according to the BBC.
