A new pregnancy options counseling brochure approved Monday by Douglas County commissioners deletes reference to individual abortion clinics and instead provides contact information through the Lane County and Jackson County health departments.

The decision to remove the names of four clinics that provide abortions in Eugene and Portland listed in the old brochure distributed by the Douglas County Health Department was to allow room for additional agencies that provide various health services for pregnant women, Commissioner Marilyn Kittelman said.

It also removed the county from providing a partial list of abortion providers available statewide.

"I don't know whether people shop for those or not, but I didn't feel it was our business to advocate one or another," Kittelman said.

Vi Lewis, a Roseburg resident who at a Board of Commissioners meeting two weeks ago protested the removal of the original brochure, said she was disappointed by the editing of the abortion material.
