The heatwave in the south of the country is set to continue over the next few days, though those in the north could be forgiven for wondering where the summer has gone. Temperatures on Sunday hit 32.3C at Heathrow airport and are set to go higher on Tuesday. Similar temperatures have been recorded across the Midlands, the South and East Anglia.

However, Manchester was hit with torrential downpours and flash flooding which closed two lanes of the M60 motorway and caused damage to homes.

Some properties were hit by lightning, while other areas suffered flooding.

The heavy rain was also seen in Scotland, with 27mm of rain falling on the Aberdeen coast.

Forecasters said that temperatures would remain in the 30s until Thursday, before becoming a little fresher.

Because of the weather, the Government has issued a heatwave warning.

The Department of Health is advising people, particularly the very young, old and those with chronic diseases, to take steps to prevent the adverse effects of hot weather such as dehydration.

It suggests common-sense precautions, such as staying indoors during the hottest part of the day and drinking regularly, preferably water or fruit juice rather than tea, coffee or alcohol.
