I've seen a lot of patterns and things for making your own stuff lately, undies even. I also saw a pattern to make your own washable, cloth, maxi pads with wings. It has an inner section where you place absorbent material. I'm not even sure what kind of material. I just took one look and thought, "no thanks."

I'm sure some people are keen on it, because it's another way of going green. I do suppose it would come in handy in an emergency.
