You will be offered immunization for your baby for whooping cough (also known as pertussis) in conjunction with immunization for diphtheria, tetanus and polio. These injections are given in three stages.

Your baby won't have any of your immunity to whooping cough, because the antibodies to this disease cannot cross the placenta. While there has been some publicity over the years about damage caused by the whooping cough vaccine, statistically the risks associated with whooping cough in young babies outweigh the risks associated with the vaccine. In addition, a homoeopathy might be able to advise you on a constitutional remedy for your baby, to promote his or her resistance to whooping cough whether or not you decide to go ahead with immunization. But bear in mind that this is no substitute for immunization.
