LIVERPOOL, Manchester, Memphis... Dundee. The City of Discovery is not exactly synonymous with rock 'n' roll but yesterday it got off to a good start.

Thirty thousand music fans baked in the sunshine as they were treated to a free festival featuring some of the best acts in the UK. The city's Campertown Park looked more like T in the Park as bands ranging from teenage Paisley newcomer Paolo Nutini to indie stalwarts Primal Scream and headline stars The Streets took to the stage.

Today's fans were due to enjoy the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Kooks and the Zutons, followed by Pink and the Sugababes.

Organisers Radio 1 and the city council declared the opening day of the weekend festival a huge success. Three hundred thousand applied for free tickets but, by random selection, only one in 10 got through.

At lunchtime, as thousands of fans streamed towards the park, the sound of Snow Patrol and Orson soundchecking in the distance set the scene.

Couples enjoyed homemade brews of snakebite and well-disguised 'voddies and lime', sneaking the odd drag on their cigarettes before heading into the non-smoking confines of the gargantuan two tents beyond the golden gates.

Sales manager Pam, 27, arrived with boyfriend Stu, 31. Having arrived at 9am from Aberdeen, the pair were clad more as mad hatters tea party than scruffy gig chic. Pam - in sequined leopard print top and pink pointed heals - wanted to dress up for the occasion.

Nearby, a group of girls placed large Xs on a crumpled piece of paper beside their chosen acts for the day: Gnarls Barkley, Keane and The Streets.

Susan, 22, from Dundee, was feeling "pretty excited" about the UK's biggest free music event taking place on her home turf. "It's just great for the area. We're the fourth biggest city in Scotland and hopefully this will pave the way for better things to come."

Backstage, Radio 1 DJ Sara Cox airkissed Jo Whiley in jest before they hugged each other affectionately.

Snow Patrol rushed past, throwing a self-conscious wink in the direction of onlookers, still charmingly excited by the fuss surrounding both them and the day.
