White wine apparently counteracts red wine stains. Pour some white wine on a sponge and sponge area, you need to do this right away. If the stain has dried in soften it with glycerine, 1 part to 2 parts water, before you start washing.And of course the old favourite...salt! Pour salt on stain, has to be immediately (salt soaks it up) and then rinse with warm water.
