Researches at the Joslin Diabetes Center have established a causal mechanism for the known link between low birth weight and type 2 diabetes. Poor prenatal nutrition impairs the pancreas' ability to secrete enough insulin, and the damage appears to be permanent. The researchers noted that poor nutrition can occur from abnormal placental development, or high maternal blood pressure, in addition to simple malnourishment of the pregnant mother.Source
