MINNEAPOLIS --
The school bus, packed with 60 kids, was returning from a day at camp Wednesday when it suddenly sounded like the world was exploding.
The I-35 West bridge in downtown Minneapolis, high above the Mississippi River, inexplicably crumpled, spilling bumper-to-bumper traffic into the water. The bus was near the edge. It bounced, twice, and stopped. ''We collapsed,'' said Ryan Watkins, a kid on board.
Christine Swift's daughter Kaleigh, 10, called from the bus at about 7:10 p.m. EDT, moments after the catastrophe. 'She was screaming, `The bridge collapsed,' '' Swift said.
With its front door wedged against a concrete traffic barrier, Kaleigh and the other kids clambered out the rear. Although two children and two adults were seriously injured, no one aboard died.
