Autogenic training was developed as a way of reaching a relaxed emotional and physical state, originally achieved through hypnosis, without the need for hypnosis. An individual is taught to achieve this state through a series of relaxation exercises and the repetition of key phrases unique to him or her. Once learned, the technique can be practised alone.Autogenics can be very useful in dealing with acute stress and anxiety, for example during delivery, but this depends how well you have learned to reach a state of relaxation at will. Initially, some sessions with a practitioner will be necessary, but once learned you will have a skill for life, not just during pregnancy and birth.
