I really don't know why women stay in a relationship that's either physically or emotionally abusive. I think one reason may be that if they already have children, it's [falsely] believed that it would be better for the children to have both parents. That's never accurate, but it's often the mindset. There's also fear.... if there's abuse, very often there's an overhanging threat (I did some crisis counseling work, this isn't from my own experience, thank goodness!) of some kind. "If you ever leave me, I'll come after you and drag you back." "If you leave, I'm going after your family." "You have to be kidding me, who else would ever want you?!"
