Do You Think That TV is Bad For Kids?

This has been a thing for as long as I could remember. People always seem to say that letting kids watch too much television is a bad thing, because it will warp their minds with rubbish that isn't true.

As I have gotten older, I can see clearly that a lot of the stuff that is portrayed on television is NOTHING like it is or would be in real life. Television is a fantasy box. Also, some say that TV hypnotizes people.

My parents sat me in front of the television quite a lot when I was growing up, and I think I turned out pretty good as far as having my own mind and making my own observations instead of falling for the stereotypes that television perpetuates.

So why do people say that TV is bad for kids?

I think it all depends on what parents let their children watch and how much time they are spending in front of the TV. Parents should monitor what the children are watching because violent shows may be harmful or frightening for a child. I also don't think that swearing and sexual scenes are appropriate for children.

Too many times parents use the TV as a babysitter and that isn't good. The parents should be interacting with their child or the child needs to be outdoors playing and getting fresh air instead of in front of the TV all the time. So yes, in some circumstances I think it can be bad for children.

If I had a child, I wouldn't want him to watch TV... at least not too often. In my opinion it's unhealhy to sit in one place for many hours and watch movies or TV shows. Not to mention that it's boring. There are better ways of spending time. I want my child to know how to enjoy little things: playing, running, breathing fresh air, reading good books, using imagination. I want my child to be active:)

My kids don't really watch much TV and they don't often ask to. When the TV is on they get bored with it quick usually and do something else. I never let them watch too much but mainly because I wanted them to be creative and active. We go for a lot of walks and they would much rather be on a walk or going to the park then watching TV.

For us it is not so much what is being shown on TV tho. We talk about the things that they may see that we think is inappropriate on the TV so as long as there is no nudity or anything of that nature, we are usually ok with them watching whatever is on.

I think a few years ago, I would have answered this saying that as long as a parent has say over what is being watched, *some* TV doesn't seem harmful especially if it's educational programs.

But it's not a few years ago and now the educational channels are showing filth in commercials, too... it's like nothing matters any longer. Things that we'd have to switch the station if a young child is watching/hearing are on all channels now.

Bottom line... yes, I now think that TV has the potential to be harmful. I prefer videos that are safe, or online streaming videos that I know are safe. Amazon prime even has a bunch of stuff for kids. No commercials with language and violence that would make a sailor blush.

I think that too much and unsupervised television watching is bad for kids. But anything in moderation is perfectly fine.

That is very true. There is madness in our society and if you stand up and say that what is going on is madness, you are the one that is deemed the mad one. It is crazy and spooky. Just the other day, my older sister and I were taking the kids out to a play zone type establishment, and we had to drive past a billboard to get to this establishment. On that billboard was an advertisement for a gentlemen's club, and on the billboard was an impossible to miss picture of a woman in the skimpiest set of lingerie ever. I could not believe it. Morals and values have gone out the window.

TV is in the same boat as that billboard in my opinion.

No, in moderation TV is fine, well at least in my opinion ha ha. As long as kids spend plenty of time engaging in other games (e.g playing outside, playing boardgames etc..) they'll turn out to be well balanced children.

My dad's cousin banned TV in her household and her kids didn't turn out well adjusted and found trouble associating with kids. To survive in such a social world, kids need to be raised to be able to interact and relate to other kids and this is easier if kids aren't isolated or banned from so many normal activities.

I'm someone that has TV on in my house most of the time. I think it's more of a background thing. I think that as long as you're not using a TV as a personal babysitter, it's fine. If your kid is sitting in front of a TV all day, then yes, it's an issue.

If you're not monitoring what your kids are watching, it's also an issue. Even certain cartoons.

I think as parents we should be actively screening what our children watch. TV has changed a lot since we were kids. I remember that cartoons use to at least try to teach you something like being friendly or honest but now it’s all a lot of nonsense and worse even violence. Shows also glamorize materialism too much and if we don't talk to our kids and explain such things they might end up having a skewed view of how the world works.

It depends on the things you let your kids watch, but in general most of the TV shows we have today aren't the best for our kid's minds! Just look at the reality TV shows we have nowadays! Most of them send the wrong message to kids, there is no way I'd ever let my kids watch reality TV at all.

I actually wonder if having a TV at the reach of their finger tips would be a good idea! I really think I'll not let my kids watch TV when they are too young.

I might wait until they are 8, because when you are too young and watch something you can't really understand, that's when something as bad as psychological damage can happen. I know because my parents would let me watch everything I wanted when I was little, yes, including violent cartoons. I'm not going to exaggerate, but watching that so early on really had an impact on me.

Too much of everything is really bad. Watching TV for kids is fine because it increases their awareness of things around them. In addition, it will make them updated and in-jive with other kids. I still remember, during my school days I was not allowed to watch TV even on weekends. So every time my friends were talking about a certain TV program or dance group or new TV commercial, I was just in the sideline listening and wondering.

I've lived with families who had young kids with a TV on at most time. I would not want this for my kid. It makes them rude about it, really. And I in general hate this way people have that, if a tv is on, they watch it no matter what's on, even when it's boring. I've actually felt this pull when people around me turn on the TV -- I start to watch just because it's there.

I'd much rather my kids be more bored. Being bored makes people more creative. Though I would not forbid TV completely -- there is a lot of great stuff to be seen and discovered that sparks the imagination rather than kill it.

I think people say that TV is bad for kids because they think kids won't do other things and just watch tv all day and become coach potatoes.

Although in some sense it it is true. Some kids will only watch tv and do nothing. Parents can take the initiative role of encouraging their kids to go outside or take their kids to do outside activities. Also watch tv together and discuss things that come up when they are watching t.v.
