I'm 47 years old. My oldest daughter is 23 years old this year and still unmarried. I want to have a grandchild but it seems that my daughter hasn't found the right person to marry yet. I wonder if I will be too old to enjoy my grandchildren. Any of you a grandmother yet? How did you receive your first grandchild?

I'm definitely not.

And I think you're still rather young to be a grandma...and your daughter is still really young. Maybe it's different where you live, but in general, I think there's still a lot of time and I definitely think you'll still be able to enjoy your grandkids, even if she doesn't have kids for another 5-10 years. :)

Yes, I hope so. I don't want to be too sickly before I receive my first grandchild. And you're right, in my country, women as young as 40 are grandparents already so I do feel that I'm already old and not a grandmother yet.

My mom is 62 and she just became a grandma for the first time (not by me, by my brother). You aren't even remotely old. You're only 17 years older than me and I feel like a freakin' CHILD still (I'm 30). It's crazy. I can't even imagine being a grandma that young.

I don't even think I'd consider having kids of my own until I'm at least 35-40, if ever. I don't understand how people do it so young. I guess they must just really like kids. I don't honestly feel any different than I did at age 19. I don't know what this says about me! lol

We have women who become grandmothers at that age, too. It's not really the 'average' age, though....and usually not the desired age either. At 40, a lot of women are trying to avoid "feeling old" and becoming a grandmother tends to cement that feeling if it's too early for them, so they don't usually crave it by then.

What's the average life expectancy where you live, though? That could make a huge difference, too.

Life expectancy where I live is about 77 years old for females. That is like just 30 years away for me. I guess in my culture being old means more respect. We don't dread being old. In fact, old people are very much respected and revered still.

This thread caught my eye today for one reason. I'm only 31 years old today and don't have any kids of my own YET. However a little boy said to me today, "do you do this with your grandchildren?" I thought, wow how old do I Look?

I'm not a grandmother. I'm not even a mother so it would be pretty hard to be a grandmother. I have never wanted to have children, but have considered adoption. Even when I was a teenager, I thought that I might adopt a kid over having one of my own.

I'm 47 and my daughter is 23, and I am a grandma. :) I don't think it's really too young, but I would agree that there is still time at this age. I'm always glad to see girls who don't rush into having babies. Live a little first, girls. You have the rest of your life to be a mom (and then a grandma!). Best wishes, Umi. Your time will come. When it does, you will love every minute of it. :D

Hi, I'm a grandmother, and I am 54. I have two beautiful granddaughters by my only child, daughter, who is 28. I also have 5 step grandkids, the eldest is 9 the youngest is 2, they are with my 2nd husbands, kids. so 7 in total, aging from 9 down to 2. I understand how you feel, it is the natural scheme of things to want to have grand kids, and no matter how old or young you are, the feeling is still the same, but your kids have there own lives to lead, and they will do things in there own time, the only thing you can do is be patient, and hope its not too long before you get the precious gift you are yearning for. best wishes to you.

That's true, Nanny, and I think it's a good thing. I want my kids to enjoy life and be young while they can. There is plenty of time for marriage and children. No rush.

Take your time. See what the world has to offer. Live, love, laugh.
